Black clouds, strong winds and a considerable amount of rainfall out at the Aviation Museum circa six likely kept some riders away tonight and resulted in a few others vying for volunteer spots. Luckily the weather improved and a quintet of riders rode the event under the encouragement and pressure of the volunteers who outnumbered them. Still, the average speeds were slow for all riders relative to their previous 2008 WTT best speeds, possibly with excuses such as - "No Warmup!" (Kathy), "Don't you know that 98% of all hypothermia cases happen in the summer when you get wet?" (year-round cyclist Celia), "I was expecting turn-around Shiree to be at the 5km mark!" (Kari), "Tired from Rideau Lakes!" (Sandra), and "How many minutes did the wind drag of my rain clothes add?" (Karen). Oh - by the way, the wind speed on our route was certainly higher than reported by Environment Canada at the Airport. In the vicinity of 20km/h against us at the end judging by the wind sock.
